Meet Daphnie Glenn, founder of the Start the Conversation movement and book series. As the self- proclaimed “Conversation Starter,” Daphnie holds a special affinity to empowering today’s youth with the necessary tools for personal success. Among the many hats that she wears are: author, educator, and motivational speaker.

As an author, her two publications, Brown Boy and Brown Girl, were birthed to help brown children digest the series of unfortunate events, specifically police brutality and shootings, that affect the African American community. Her passion was validated through her nephew, who in 2016, began asking questions about the shooting of Trayvon Martin, an innocent teen who was gunned down by a neighborhood watchman. It is a personal goal of Daphnie’sto start the conversation in homes and classroom across the continent. Both Brown Boy and Brown Girl have reached the hands of hundreds of children across the US and hold top spots in the category of Multicultural Books for Children on Amazon!

As an educator, Daphnie holds a Masters of Education in Higher Education Administration from Columbia College. She has always had a commitment to academic excellence, overcoming many financial disparities faced in her youth. Currently, she serves as the Assistant Director for College Success at Furman University and is in her third year of teaching. She also serves on the Alumni Board of Directors for USC Upstate and is a mentor for EmpowHER in Greenville.

As a motivational speaker, Daphnie uses her books to start a number of crucial conversations with today’s youth. Her message of empowerment and positivity foster outcomes such as anti-bullying, self-advocacy, non-violence, mentorship and self-love. She has visited a plethora of schools and organizations throughout the country encouraging youth and other advocates to begin talking about tough topics.
